Get set to get on the pistes of Les Deux Alpes - the summer season is nearly here
It only seems five minutes since we tidied our snowboard away and hung up the winter coat, but Les Deux Alpes is opening for the summer season as of the 13th June. The resort will be operating summer skiing, downhill mountain biking and offering access to hikers right through the summer until 29th August.
Summer skiing has become somewhat synonymous with Les Deux Alpes, as the domain offers over 90 hectares of skiing on the glacier and an 18 hectare-sized snowpark all at well over 3000m altitude. The international reputation of the snowpark will be further enhanced this summer with the completion of the Superpipe we told you about earlier this year.
Shapers and pisteurs will be working hard between the 8th and 12th June to get this super-sized halfpipe, which complies with Olympic specifications being 6.50m high and 120m long, into shape for opening on the 13th. Even if you're not a crazy freestyler, go and take at look as it really is quite impressive and even just dropping in off the lip is a daunting task. We don't mind holding our hands up now and saying we'll be leaving the Superpipe to the experts!
Of course, it's not just about summer skiing and boarding in Les Deux Alpes. Over 35% of summer visitors head into resort for the downhill mountain biking. Adapted lifts and a plethora of enduro, cross country and downhill pistes makes for great fun on a mountain bike. The summer mountain bike season will kick off with bang on the 18 June with the Mondial du VTT, which is THE mountain bike gear test and event of the year in France.
Walkers aren't forgotten either. The lifts will whisk hikers into the heart of the Ecrins National Park and there are over 200km of signposted walks for you to try.
With the lifts opening on the 13th June for skiing, boarding, mountain biking and walking, we can't decided what we're going to do first! Lifts open until the 29th August 2009.
