Blue Skies, Fresh Snow and Quiet Pistes
Perfect Piste Conditions
What a beautiful week we're having in Alpe d'Huez!
We started this week with a massive dump of snow, and now it's blue skies and empty pistes for the rest of the week! If you are in Alpe d'Huez, it's dream conditions.
And we are waiting daily - hourly even! - for a legal announcement that the British market will be able to travel again for tourism. And if we get the announcement, expect the slopes to pick up and be much busier from now on. Although, whether they will manage to travel this weekend depends on when we receive this official announcement. Keep your eyes peeled on our pages - we will be updating ASAP when we receive the good news!
Snow Report
Current conditions are the best we can hope for on piste. We had an entire weekend of heavy snow, followed by blue skies ever since. We have also had freezing temperatures, consistently -10C most mornings this week. And whilst finger-tingling cold on the chair lifts, it has meant that the snow conditions have remained fresh all week.
On piste, the snow is quite hard-packed, but still with a friendly 'crunch' to it when you're skiing. Mornings are reserved for fresh corduroy and groomed pistes. And as we (still!) don't have the British contingent on the hill, it's stayed super quiet. Which is absolutely devastating for so many businesses. But it has also meant that the snow is staying in excellent condition all day. No moguls are being carved out, and even 3 days after the snowfall, there is still fresh powder to be hunted out.
Snow Forecast
The temperatures are due to rise from Friday, although still between 0-5C during the day, the temperature isn't likely to drop quite so dramatically during the night. So we will see if this warming-up starts to 'slush' up the pistes. Especially when you descend to the lower resort levels.
There is no fresh snow on the forecast yet, so make the most of blue, sunny skies. And although it's cold, make sure you've got your sun protection on! There are some red faces to be seen around the resort right now - don't be one of them!
Jen's Top Tips
- If you can arrange a guide and get off-piste - do it! Some fantastic conditions to be explored - safely!
- Sun protection - cream, block etc. And don't forget to slather up the kids before sending them off to ski school.
- Benefit from the quiet pistes to put some mileage in! It's incredible how much ground/snow you can cover when there are no lift queues!
